What is Textile?

Textile refers to any material made from fibers, yarns, or fabrics used for clothing, home furnishings,
or industrial purposes. It is the foundation of the global fashion and manufacturing industry.

Natural Fibers

Derived from plants or animals.

  • Cotton: Soft, breathable, and the backbone of the Bangladesh garment industry.
  • Jute: Known as the "Golden Fiber"—strong, eco-friendly, and sustainably produced in Bangladesh.
  • Silk: Smooth, lustrous, and premium quality.
  • Wool: Provides warmth; sourced from animal fleece.

Synthetic (Man-Made) Fibers

Engineered through chemical processes.

  • Polyester: Highly durable, quick-drying, and wrinkle-resistant.
  • Nylon: Known for extreme strength and elasticity.
  • Acrylic: A lightweight, synthetic alternative to wool.

Yarn Formation

Fibers are converted into yarn through several technical processes:

  • Spinning: Drawing out and twisting fibers together.
  • Twisting: Increasing strength and durability of the strand.
  • Blending: Combining different fibers (e.g., CVC - Chief Value Cotton or PC - Polyester Cotton) to enhance fabric performance.

Fabric Construction

Yarns are transformed into fabric using three main methods

  • Method: Interlacing two sets of yarns (warp and weft) at right angles.
  • Examples: Denim, Twill, Poplin (used for shirts and jeans).
  • Traits: Strong, stable, but has limited stretch.
  • Knit Fabric: Method: Intermeshing loops of yarn.
  • Examples: Single Jersey, Rib, Interlock (used for T-shirts and hoodies).

Dyeing & Finishing

Once the fabric is constructed, it undergoes "Wet Processing"

  • Dyeing: Applying uniform color to the fiber, yarn, or fabric.
  • Printing: Applying localized designs or patterns (Screen, Digital, or Heat Transfer).
  • Finishing: The final touch to improve functionality (e.g., Softening, Anti-shrinkage, Water-repellency, or Peach-finish).

End Uses

Information Required

  • Apparel: Fashion wear like shirts, sarees, jeans, and activewear.
  • Home Textiles: Bed linen, curtains, towels, and upholstery.
  • Technical Textiles: Industrial ropes, safety gear, and medical textiles.
